NATCHITOCHES, LOUISIANA … With all of its many festivals and events, Natchitoches has not traditionally had a St. Patrick’s Day celebration or parade, but that lack will end this year.

The Cane River Irish Marching Club presents a St. Patrick’s Day Celebration and Parade along downtown Natchitoches on March 15, 2008.

The celebration starts at 10 am and will consist of games and vendors for the whole family, arts and crafts and an evening pub crawl for adults.

The parade, starting at 2:30 pm, will feature floats, marching groups, dance lines and school bands. Marchers will dispense beads and other favors to spectators.

Joe Darby, founder of the club and a retired newspaper reporter from New Orleans who recently moved to Natchitoches, said, “The celebrations of St. Patrick’s Day, which honors the patron saint of Ireland, has proved popular in other communities in Louisiana and across America.

“Hopefully we can start a new tradition in Natchitoches. No matter what your ethnic background is, you can be Irish for a day. Just put an ‘O’ in front of your name and take a sip of green beer.
